What is ESL?
ESL is an English as a Second Language program that is offered to students who are learning English as their second language and qualify for the program.
What services do esl students receive?
ESL students are placed with English speaking students in a regular classroom setting with a teacher who has an ESL certification. Students needing extra language support may receive additional instruction from the campus ESL Specialist in a small group setting.
What qualifies a student for ESL services?
*Home Language Survey indicates a language other than English, and
*Oral Language Proficiency Test (OLPT) indicates non English speaking (NES) or limited English speaking (LES), or
*In grades 2-6, if the OLPT score is fluent English speaking (FES), a score below 40% on the
Reading or Language portion of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).
